Institute of Visual Computing (IVC)
Workshop for scholarship holders of the Hans Riegel Foundation
This exciting event was organised in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, which ensured that the participants had access to first-class expertise and resources for their experiences.
The workshop was organised in two parts:
1. Demonstrations in the IVC showrooms
Participants were invited to take part in a detailed tour of the showrooms of the Institute for Visual Computing (IVC). These rooms offer insights into the ongoing projects and innovative visual computing applications being developed at the IVC. Participants were able to experience first-hand how visualisation technologies are applied in practice and be inspired by the latest developments. This provided a deeper understanding of the research work and innovations taking place at the IVC.
2. Introduction to Unity in the university's own game studio
The second part of the workshop focussed on delving deeper into the domain of game development. Under the expert guidance of the scientific staff, the participants acquired basic knowledge in the use of the widely used game engine Unity. However, the workshop was not limited to theoretical knowledge transfer. The scholarship holders were also given the opportunity to programme their own computer games in a jump-and-run style. This practical exercise took place on the premises of the university's own game studio. This practical approach contributed significantly to the participants being able to put the knowledge they had acquired in game development into practice immediately.
The enthusiasm of the participants was palpable, as they not only acquired new knowledge, but also had the opportunity to be creative and realise their own ideas.
The workshop participants left the event with a deeper understanding of visual computing and Unity as well as a self-developed computer game in their pockets.
The Hans Riegel Foundation, named after former HARIBO co-owner Dr Hans Riegel, plays an important role in promoting young talent and shaping their future. The charitable foundation has set itself the task of supporting projects such as this workshop and thus accompanying young people on their educational path.
Through such remarkable workshops, in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, and the support of the Hans Riegel Foundation, Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences emphasises its ongoing commitment to education and innovation. This provides students and scholarship holders with unique learning opportunities in cutting-edge fields of technology.
