Prof Dr Norbert Jung and Prof Dr Karl Jonas say goodbye with a ‘Last Lecture’
Norbert Jung, Professor of Applied Computer Science specialising in Embedded Systems, was a founding member of the Computer Science Faculty Council and the University Senate. In teaching, he established the ‘Embedded Systems’ specialisation in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes. On the research side, he initiated and led over 30 third-party funded projects, including on the security of technical systems and biometrics. His role in establishing the Biometrics Evaluation Centre (BEZ) and the Institute for Safety and Security Research (ISF) was particularly influential.
Karl Jonas, Professor of Computer Science specialising in multimedia communication, founded the Laboratory for Multimedia Communication (MCLab), where he and his team conducted research into long-distance WiFi, software-defined networking, home automation and IT security. His involvement in the Cyber Security Learning Lab (in cooperation with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft) and the Cyber Campus NRW (CCNRW, together with the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences) is particularly noteworthy. In close collaboration with colleagues from the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences and the H-BRS, he developed the new Cyber Security & Privacy degree programme, which impresses with its high practical relevance and strong cooperation with business and politics.
Both professors were also involved in academic self-administration for many years - Prof Jung in the Senate and Prof Jonas as head of the examination board. Their work combined academic excellence with practical training and social commitment.
Dean Prof Dr Sascha Alda and Vice Dean Prof Dr Matthias Bertram expressed their heartfelt thanks to both professors for their exceptional commitment and lasting influence on the Department of Computer Science.
With the departure of Prof Jung and Prof Jonas, the department is not only losing two long-standing colleagues, but also two formative personalities who have shaped teaching, research and self-administration with great commitment and innovation over many years.
The Department of Computer Science wishes them both good health, happiness and continued inspiring projects in their new phase of life.
