For his work "Foveated Depth-of-Field Filtering in Head-mounted Displays", published in the journal: ACM TAP (Transactions on Applied Perception), PhD student Martin Weier (H-BRS/IVC and Saarland University) received the Best Paper Award at this year's ACM-SAP-conference. Co-authors are Thorsten Roth, H-BRS/IVC and Brunel University, Prof. Dr. André Hinkenjann, H-BRS/IVC and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Philipp Slusallek, Saarland University and DFKI Saarbrücken.

The presented system exploits the optical and retinal limitations of the human visual system to improve rendering quality and performance in head-mounted displays. Therefore, a tightly integrated model of gaze-contingent depth-of-field is applied to the rendered image. This approach filters rendering artifacts resulting from undersampling.
