How do groups of people interact when working or playing together on large displays? Dr. Anton Sigitov shed a light on this question in his PhD project that was supervised by Prof. Dr. Hinkenjann (H-BRS) and Prof. Dr. Oliver Staadt from Rostock University. As a member of the Institute of Visual Computing Sigitov was able to carry out experiments at the large 7x3 meter high-resolution HORNET screen at Sankt Augustin Campus.

Abstract

Collaboration among multiple users on large displays leads to intricate behavioral patterns and group dynamics. To gain a deeper understanding of collaboration on vertical, large, and high-resolution screens, this dissertation builds on previous research and gains novel insights through a series of observational studies. Among other things, the collected results reveal new patterns of collaborative coupling, suggest that territorial behavior is less critical than shown in previous research, and show that workspace awareness can also negatively affect the effectiveness of individual users.

What's next?

Sigitov currently works for Zurich Insurance Group as a Software Engineer and he plans to keep this position for the next couple of years. Whether he will return to research or stay in industry afterwards? At the moment he tends to return to research, but his final decision will depend on the situation on the market and available jobs.

Any advice for current PhD students?
