Metadata
It is often possible to provide data generated by measuring systems directly with a structured file name. If this is not the case, it is up to the researcher to decide which nomenclature to use for his files. What is important here is that it is comprehensible and can be unterstood by others and, of course, by one's own.
Some file formats also offer the possibility to store metadata. Thus, further information about the file can be embedded and later retrieved using suitable search tools.
For example, when creating a PDF in PDF/A format, information about the author, title and topic can be specified in the file properties.
In order to be able to uniquely describe a dataset, relevant information must be stored in a metadata schema.
Here is the simplified metadata schema for DOI assignment by DataCite. In addition to the mandatory information, it is also possible to provide information recommended by DataCite and other optional information.
