Bib-Discover - finding knowledge in the library
Bib-Discover is the library's search system, based on a licenced index with several million data records. This means that you can also find sources that are not part of the library's collection but can easily be ordered via interlibrary loan.
Bib-Discover is based on a licensed index with several million records. With it, you can even find sources that are not part of the library’s holdings, but may easily be ordered via interlibrary loan.
Your search may be refined using a variety of filters. If you would like to only focus on the library holdings in Sankt Augustin and Rheinbach, the hit list may be filtered accordingly. Hits can also be refined to show only digital sources, specific publications or certain formats (e.g. books or journal articles).
As in our previous library catalogue, the account and lending functions are integrated into Bib-Discover: In addition to orders and reservations, you can also use your account to renew the loan period of your borrowed items.
Remote access must be set up for accessing the electronic full text outside the campus network:
Tips & tricks for searching
Simple search
The input field on the start page leads to a simple search. Enter one or more words and click on the magnifying glass icon to start the search. All search results containing these words – whether as author, title, keywords or even in the table of contents or the full text – will be displayed. The default sorting of the search result list is by relevance.
Please note:
If you do not use logical operators like OR or NOT (see Boolean operators), it is assumed that search results should contain all entered words.
Advanced search
You can switch from simple to advanced search by clicking the button next to the magnifying glass icon. In the advanced search you will find an input mask allowing you to search in more precisely defined categories:
On the left side you can choose in which part of the description the search word from the connected search field should appear (author, title, year, etc.).
On the right side you can further narrow down the hits (period, type of material, language).
Search for a phrase (exact string)
If you want to search for a phrase, put it in quotation marks. You can combine words and phrases in your search.
Example:
Type the following phrase to search for global warming as a search term: "global warming"
Notice:
If the phrase is not enclosed in quotation marks, documents containing the entered words will be found, regardless of the order.
Search with Boolean Operators (AND / OR / NOT)
OR
=> one of the search conditions must be true, but it is also possible that several/all of them are true
You can search for matches that contain at least one of the words or phrases you entered in the search box. To do this, use the Boolean operator OR (in capital letters) between the words or phrases.
Example:
To search for matches containing the word Irish or the word Celtic, type the following combination in the search box: Irish OR Celtic.
NOT
=> the first search condition must be true, but the second must not be true
You can exclude hits that contain certain words or phrases. To do this, use the Boolean operator NOT (in capital letters). Then enter the word or phrase to be excluded.
Example:
To search for matches that contain the word Celtic but do not contain the word Irish, type the following combination in the search box: Celtic NOT Irish.
Notice:
If you do not use Boolean operators, hits are assumed to include all words entered, default is the AND operator.
Search with truncation characters (placeholders)
For your search you can use the following placeholders to mask or truncate parts of words:
? replaces a single letter
Example:
Enter Ve?tor to search for Vektor, vector, etc.
* for none, one or more letters
Example:
Enter architect* to search for architect, architects, architecture, etc.

You can save your search queries if you are logged in. You can find the function in "Saved searches" under "My favorites" next to "Saved records". This will give you result lists of previous searches.
The following information is displayed for each title:
- Type of resource - the format of the copy, such as book, article, journal
- Title, author, other persons involved, year of publication
- Availability
You can get the full display by clicking on the title.
If it is a printed copy, you can find the signature and location of the medium by clicking on the line "Available at ... / Not available ...".
For an electronic resource, the link "Available Online" appears below the title.
If you click on the small pin to the right of the title, the title will be marked and saved in the Favorites list.
Full displa of a result / order books
Under Locations / Orders you can check where the title is currently available.
To see individual copies at their location, click on the title.
You will be able to see which copies are available for loan and which ones are currently borrowed by other people. You can find the copy in the library by means of its indicated signature.
To reserve a borrowed copy, please sign in first.
Sort result list
By default, the hits are sorted by relevance.
There are many criteria for relevance that are taken into account:
For example, if the search words found are in the title, the hit will be placed higher than if they appear in the subtitle, series or table of contents.
The exact order of the search words, the frequency of the search words in the metadata, the publication dates and editions - all these factors and many more go into the order (ranking) of the hit set.
However, you can also have the titles re-sorted by "date-newest", "author" or "title".
You can find the sorting option to the left of the hit list
Modify / refine research results
Also to the left of the hit list, you will find criteria in the facets to narrow down the set of hits, e.g. ...
- available in print
- available online
- new in stock
- publication type
- year of publication
- library
- author / editor
- language
You can select or exclude these facets by clicking in the corresponding box.
Selected facets can be manifested for the research session by clicking on the lock icon (on mouseover).
Share results / print / permalink
Various output options are offered under "Send to".
You can print, send or export the displayed record and copy a permalink or QR code of the title.
