From 1 November 2024, Privatdozentin Mirle Schemionek-Reinders will be Professor of Molecular Diagnostics and Applied Genetics at H-BRS. The winner of the Dr Horst Bölke Foundation Prize for the Promotion of Science and Research against Leukaemia studied biology at the University of Münster and at Massey University in New Zealand. She also completed a degree in business administration for PhD students and received her doctorate from the University of Münster in 2009. Her dissertation focussed on the biology of malignant stem cells. During her postdoctoral period, she worked at the University of Massachusetts in the USA.

In her research activities, Schemionek-Reinders focussed on the therapeutic resistance of stem cells in malignant diseases of the blood and lymphatic system. "We have the Institute for Genetic Analysis. This is a good framework in which Professor Schemionek-Reinders will work and contribute to the reputation of science and the university," said President Hartmut Ihne on the occasion of her appointment. With her research to date, she has contributed to the realisation that malignant stem cells can survive despite targeted therapy. The aim of her further research is to identify new target structures that enable the therapeutic elimination of malignant stem cells.

„I look forward to contributing my expertise and experience as a professor at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg and continuing to contribute to teaching and research in this exciting field.”

Professor Mirle Schemionek-Reinders

Since 2012, Schemionek-Reinders has been Head of Molecular Diagnostics at the Department of Haematology, Oncology, Haemostaseology and Stem Cell Transplantation at RWTH Aachen University Hospital, where she introduced molecular genetic methods into the diagnosis of haematological diseases.

In 2020, Schemionek-Reinders habilitated at RWTH Aachen University in the field of "Molecular Medicine".

Until further notice, she will continue to head a working group at the University Hospital at RWTH Aachen University, which is intensively involved in research into the therapy resistance of malignant stem cells.
