Guest talk by Matias Valdenegro

We are happy to announce that MAS alumnus Matias Valdenegro will be giving a talk on underwater robot perception on Friday 23.10.2015 in C-116 at 17:00.

Matias is currently a Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher at Robocademy ITN – Heriot-Watt University in Scotland where he is pursuing his PhD.

Title: Underwater Robot Perception – Introduction and State of the Art

Abstract:
Robot Perception is a well-studied field, but in the case of Underwater Robotics it is less studied and more restricted literature exists because of the unique challenges of the underwater medium. Optical cameras underwater cannot see very far due to light attenuation and scattering, which leads to the use of Imaging sonar of different kinds, but sonar images are very noisy and prone to reflections from the environment, which makes them challenging for tasks such as object recognition and SLAM. In this talk we will first make a small introduction to underwater robotics and the underwater domain, and then we will discuss the current state of the art for underwater perception algorithms.
