The Institute of Visual Computing (IVC) at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University has been working on multisensory immersive systems with a high potential for use in a therapeutic context for several years.
The promising approach is based on a realistic simulation of traumatic situations: Multisensory stimulation is combined with an immersive environment (e.g. via Head Mounted Displays, HMDs) as part of an exposure therapy.
The aim of the project is to develop a dynamic adaptation of the stimuli in cooperation with external partners according to individual feedback of physiological patient data. The system is supposed to provide multisensory context-sensitive cues in real time based on the physiological properties of the subject.
Similar approaches have already been successfully established abroad. However, they are not equally widespread in Germany and in many cases they do not tap their full potential since they only use visual stimulation.
