Cyber Security & Privacy (BSc)

Digitalisation is one of the megatrends of our time. It has just received a further boost from the Corona pandemic and it is currently transforming more and more areas of social, economic and private life. This opens up great opportunities in many fields, such as the design and development of digital applications and technical assistance systems, automation or digitised administrative processes. At the same time, digitalisation brings new risks such as cyberattacks, fake news, leaks of large quantities of personal data and the digital division of society.

That's why we need solutions and experts for cyber security & privacy for successful and responsible digitalisation. You want to take responsibility? You want to help shape the future? You want to develop secure, privacy-enhancing and participation-oriented solutions for digital infrastructures, services and applications? Then the Cyber Security & Privacy degree programme at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences is the right choice for you!

Course contents

The Bachelor's programme Cyber Security & Privacy at the Department of Computer Science imparts a solid knowledge of the fundamentals of computer science and offers a wide range of specialist topics in cyber security & privacy. Practical content is taught by professors from the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences, experts from the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the Fraunhofer Institute FKIE. In the modules Introduction to Information Security, Data Protection, IT Law and Privacy, students learn the basics of IT security.

In the advanced modules, students expand their specialist knowledge:

  • Applied Cryptography
  • Network security Security of web applications
  • Management of information security
  • Digital Forensics
  • Identity Management and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)

The Cyber Security & Privacy degree programme also offers elective courses from the Department of Computer Science - and, as part of Cyber Campus NRW, also from the Cyber Security Management degree programme at Hochschule Niederrhein (University of Applied Sciences). Thus, students can also set a regulatory focus in IT security management in their studies.

Interdisciplinary qualifications in ethics and scientific work as well as a three-month practical project and the final thesis round off the programme of the degree programme. We support the possibility of a stay abroad during the degree programme.

Requirements

Analytical thinking, responsible handling of sensitive data and curiosity are important for this degree programme. One of the key learning objectives of this degree programme is to further develop these skills and deepen them using specialist expertise and examples from theory and practice.

Career prospects

There is currently strong demand from companies and authorities - both regionally and nationally - for academically trained experts in Cyber Security & Privacy. Our graduates have a solid academic education in computer science and are therefore also qualified for the usual professional fields of activity of computer scientists. The path to academic research is also open to our graduates.

Those who wish to deepen their knowledge even further can then enrol on the research-oriented consecutive Master's degree programme in Cyber Security & Privacy, which has been offered since the winter semester 2023/2024.

The newly founded Institute for Cyber Security & Privacy (ICSP) at the Department of Computer Science enables current topics to be exchanged with international experts. Research projects are working on the further development of proposed solutions to improve security, which is why qualified employees are in demand in these areas.
