Visual Computing & Games Technology (MSc)

You have a strong interest in the technical side of computer games? You always wanted to know the science behind the entertainment? Then the Master "Visual Computing and Games Technology" is just right for you!

Note: In the winter semester 2025/2026, the Visual Computing & Games Technology (M.Sc.) degree programme will become the English-language Games Technology (M.Sc.) degree programme. Further information will follow.

The Master's program provides in-depth fundamental knowledge and practical skills for computer games, which are necessary, for example, for the creation of new rendering methods and innovative user interfaces. In addition, topics such as user experience, computer vision and scientific visualization are also covered. The degree programme is suitable for part-time study.

There is a strong focus on current topics and emerging technologies from research and practice, such as extended reality (virtual/augmented reality), deep learning / AI, interaction with robots, serious games, rendering / game engine optimization or motion capturing and character animation. These topics are integrated in lectures and additional lectures and workshops, e.g. by industry experts.  Some of the highlights of the master program are the continuous project work over three semesters (e.g. for the development of games or other complex systems) and the mobility window in the 3rd semester.

What we offer

  • 20+ years of experience in teaching and research in the field of visual computing technologies
  • Expertise in game development since 2006 (over 100 games developed in our bachelor and master courses)
  • Regular game events, game jams, esport events (in cooperation with the TESSA team), workshops and presentation of the results at our own booth at Gamescom
  • Cooperation with partner universities in the region, e.g. in the Games Technology Network project
  • Guest lectures from the industry by renowned speakers from Germany and abroad (game.impulse lecture series)
  • State-of-the-art laboratories and an award-winning game studio (Hochschulperle 2022)
  • Own game development team
  • Possibility to work on research projects (jobs), supported by the internationally renowned research institute of HBRS (Institute for Visual Computing)
  • Numerous opportunities for semesters abroad in the excellent partner network e.g. in Japan and Canada

Part-time: Courses currently take place three days a week. We support you with this if you work alongside your studies.

"Ich kann durch meine halbe Stelle am Institut für Visual Computing das Studium ideal durch praxisnahe Entwicklung ergänzen." - Maximilian Schäfer, MVG Student
Translation: My half-time position at the Institute for Visual Computing is the ideal way to supplement my studies with practical development.
