Study Financing

Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences is a state university and therefore does not charge tuition fees. However, there is a semester contribution that must be paid each semester. The semester contribution includes, for example, a mobility ticket and a social service contribution. Re-registration for the new semester takes place by transferring the semester fee. A fee is due for late re-registration; if the fee is not paid at all, exmatriculation will follow. Exemption from the semester fee is only possible under certain conditions.

The cost of living during a degree programme can vary greatly depending on individual requirements, standard of living and hobbies. Factors such as health insurance (which students must provide proof of) also depend on your personal living situation, depending on age, marital status, etc.

BAföG stands for educational support in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Training Assistance Act. This means that students who lack the money they need to support themselves and their education are entitled to individualised support. The support is tailored to the financial means of the applicants and their families. International students can receive BAföG only under certain conditions.

For H-BRS students, the Studierendenwerk Bonn is the responsible contact point for questions and applications.

Parents are legally required to finance their (adult) children's education (including studies) until they obtain their first professional qualification. Accordingly, parents are legally obliged to provide maintenance until the end of the course.

For the duration of school or vocational training (studies), children are still entitled to child benefit until they reach the age of 24.

Scholarships are another important component of student financing. The financial support provided by a scholarship generally does not have to be repaid. In contrast to BAföG funding, which is available to everyone who is eligible and submits an application, scholarship funding is preceded by an application and selection process. A wide variety of foundations offer scholarships. For some scholarships, you can apply before you start your studies, for others this is only possible afterwards.
There are some special scholarships for H-BRS students.

Part-time jobs are an important part of financing their studies for many students. There are various options, e.g. "mini-job" or employment as a "working student". You have to concider for example income limits for BAföG funding or health insurance. In addition to the income, a part-time job can provide practical experience that can be helpful for starting a career later on. However, working alongside your studies also means an additional (time) burden that must be coordinated with the requirements of a degree programme.

You can also take out a (student) loan to finance your studies. Requirements, processing fees, interest rates, repayment terms and any additional costs will need to be considered. The Studierendenwerk Bonn advises on some loan offers for students.
