Prof. Fengyuan Zhuang (left) from Bejing went on a short trip to Rheinbach during his journey to Europe. There he also met Yu Zhang, doctoral candidate under the supervision of Prof. Edda Tobiasch.

There was bright sunshine when Fengyuan Zhuang arrived at our Rheinbach campus. At Bejing University, Prof. Zhuang is, among other things, responsible for the “Doktorand (doctoral candidate) in Space Life: China Scholarship Council Stipendium Program”. He was accompanied by Dr Christine E. Hellweg, who works in the area of radiation biology at the Institute for Aviation and Aerospace Medicine in the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne, where she coordinates the doctoral degree programme on the German side. Prof. Dr Edda Tobiasch (Department of Applied Natural Sciences) has recently been representing our University in her capacity as an associate member of this programme.

During his visit, Prof. Zhuang took the opportunity to discuss starting points for further cooperation; secondly, he asked Prof. Tobiasch about the progress of 27-year-old Yu Zhang in his doctoral thesis, which is being supervised by Tobiasch at Rheinbach.

LaterLater Dr Gerda Horneck arrived. She used to be the Deputy Director of the DLR Institute and is now very actively involved with aerospace research: she is the Principal Investigator of several aerospace experiments in the areas of radiation biology and exobiology, as well as being a lecturer in this field of study and a consultant to national and international aerospace organisations.
