b-it-bots take 3rd place at the RoboCup German Open 2025

12 March - 16 March 2025, Nuremberg - The b-it-bots @work and @home teams from Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences competed in this year's RoboCup German Open. Unfortunately, the b-it-bots @home team was unable to score points due to a defective robot. For the b-it-bots @work team, however, the competition proved to be excellent preparation for the world championship. This year, some new challenges were introduced that put the robots to the test. In particular, the change in ground conditions, which differed from previous years, posed a major challenge. The youbot, the team's previous flagship, struggled to achieve its usual precision on the slippery surface, which presented the team with unexpected hurdles.

Despite these challenges, the b-it-bots were able to shine in a tense competition and secure an excellent 3rd place. Third place is particularly motivating for the team, as the focus is now on developing a new robot platform for the @Work team. The new robot, Scratch, should be ready for use by the World Championships in July at the latest. The youbot, which will now be retired, will then hopefully be replaced by the newly developed platform.

Even though the team didn't quite live up to their expectations in the final, the reason for their less than ideal performance was a ‘human error’, as they themselves jokingly admitted: ‘Our robot may be autonomous, but it still needs its humans.’ A small slip-up meant that they were unable to achieve first place, but this did not put the team in a bad mood, quite the opposite. The competition showed once again how important teamwork and precise preparation are.
The b-it-bots see the RoboCup German Open not only as a competition, but also as an important opportunity to further improve their robots and test the technology for the upcoming challenges in the world championship.
The RoboCup German Open 2025 has shown that the b-it-bots' team @work is on a promising path, and third place gives them an extra boost to compete against the international teams with Scratch in the upcoming world championship in July. The youbot may soon be retiring, but the team's success remains on track - and the robotics adventure continues.
