In this interactive workshop, our Canadian guest professor Kenneth Kent will introduce you to research methods on a postgraduate level with a special focus on publishing. It is open to PhDs of all departments and to PhD sudents from H-BRS as well as members of PK NRW from other universities of applied sciences.

In this interactive workshop we will introduce and discuss various aspects of research methods from the start of a literature review to the final completion of disseminating your findings with a focus on publishing your results. A brief outline of topics include - but are not limited to the following:

  • Knowing what, when and where to publish
  • Critically reviewing existing literature
  • Managing references and avoiding plagiarism
  • The Peer-reviewing process, how does it work?
  • Giving effective presentations
  • Discussion on Ethics: Why do research?

Target group: The workshop is open to members of the H-BRS Graduate institute as well as members of Promotionskolleg NRW from other Universities of Applied Science in NRW. It is suitable for all departments.

Biography

Dr. Kenneth Kent obtained his Ph.D. and M.Sc. from the University of Victoria (Canada)and his B.Sc. from Memorial University (Canada). He is a professor in the Faculty of Computer Science, Barrett Chair in Entrepreneurship for Digital Transformation and Director of the IBM Centre for Advanced Studies – Atlantic at the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton, Canada). He is also an honorary professor at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg. In addition to his academic career, Dr. Kent is a Co-Founder of anessa Inc. where he has filled roles as Chief Product Officer and Vice-President Funding & Investments. Dr. Kent is also a registered professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick. His research interests include high-performance/cloud computing, embedded systems, software engineering, and managed runtimes. He has been engaged in many industrial partnerships including IBM, Google, RedHat and Huawei where he has supervised many graduate students. This work has contributed to several disclosures & patents, and over 200 academic publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings.
