Interactive Workshop: Research Methods for PhDs
Instructor: Prof. Dr. Kenneth Kent, P.Eng
Abstract:
Graduate research is quite different than simply attending courses and doing assigned work one completes in their bachelor studies. Instead it involves you conducting research in a setting that has many challenges and pitfalls beyond the subject matter that you are studying. In this interactive workshop we will introduce and discuss various aspects of “research methods” from the start of a literature review to the final completion of disseminating your findings. A brief outline of topics include - but are not limited to the following:
- Critically reviewing existing literature
- Giving effective presentations
- Managing references and avoiding plagiarism
- Knowing what, when and where to publish
- Professional codes of ethics & whistle blowing
- Research integrity: Data & experiment validity, dissemination, referencing and plagiarism
- Intellectual Property: Creative commons, patents, copyright, trademarks, non-disclosure agreements and research contracts
- Privacy responsibilities of data holders, trust, and identity theft
Target group: The workshop is open to members of the H-BRS Graduate institute as well as members of Promotionskolleg NRW from other Universities of Applied Science in NRW.
